Distinguishing Features: White flowers in large clusters, seed capsules split in half when dry
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 20 to 30 feet tall, oval-rounded crown
- Leaf: Opposite arranged leaves, simple, sharply tipped, lanceolate to ovate, dark green leaves (to 6 inches long),
- Flower: Off-white flowers, blooms in early summer, flowers are borne in large terminal panicles, panicles are up to a foot long, panicles can be up to 10 inches wide
- Bark: Reddish-brown peeling bark is on younger branches, gradually turning gray with age, horizontal lenticels
- Fruit or Seed: Capsules borne in large panicles, capsules have a blunt tip, capsules are a tan color
