Distinguishing Features: Showy white, pink or purple flowers in large clusters, fruit is dry 6-part capsule that splits when dry

- Leaf: Opposite or the upper alternate, simple, 1-2.75 inches long, oval to oblong, lustrous medium to dark green with showy, yellow, orange or red colors in the fall
- Flower: White, pink, lavender, purple to deep red in 6-8 inches long, 3-5 inches wide panicles
- Bark: Gray bark,thin and exfoliating bark
- Fruit or Seed: Brown or black fruits that dry and split when mature
