Distinguishing Features: Short spines at leaf points, dark green above with lighter green below
- Type: Evergreen
- Form at maturity: 15 to 30 feet tall, may reach a height of 50 feet, has a narrow, pyramidal crown
- Leaf: Alternate evergreen leaves, 1.5 to 3.5 inches long and about half as wide, leaves have short spines, dull, dark, green or yellow-green color above and lighter underneath
- Flower: Dioecious, with male and female plants, small Whitish-green flowers
- Bark: Smooth until quite old, gray-brown
- Fruit or Seed: Red, small, berry-like fruit, borne on a stalk
