Distinguishing Features: Flowers appear after leaves drop, seed capsule explosively expels seeds in the fall
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 10 to 15 feet tall in most instances, can reach upto 30 feet tall, nearly as wide as tall, develops an irregular but rounded outline
- Leaf: alternate, simple leaves, obovate to elliptical with uneven base, leaves are 3 to 6 inches long; 2 to 3.5 inches wide, margins of leaves are coarsely toothed, bright to dark green, new leaves emerge reddish-bronze, clear yellow in fall
- Flower: Stem-hugging clusters of fragrant bright yellow flowers, each with four crinkly, ribbon-shaped petals, Flowers may be tinged with orange and/or red
- Bark: Smooth gray to gray brown
- Fruit or Seed: Greenish, 0.5 inch long seed capsules that become woody with age and mature to light brown
