Gymnocladus dioicus
Distinguishing Features: Very large, chunky seed pod with large seeds
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: Grows up to 75 feet tall or even larger, develops a 40 to 50 feet spread with an irregular open oval to obovate crown
- Leaf: Alternate bipinnately compound leaves, leaves are up to 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, 6 to 14 leaflets per leaf, each leaflet also has 6 to 14 leaflets, dark green or blue-green, with a tinge of pink in case of fresh leaves
- Flower: Dioecious, with male and female plants, greenish white 0.75 to 1 inch long flowers, flowers held in large panicles; 8 to 12 inches long for females and 3 to 4 inches long for males
- Bark: Gray coloured, ridged and furrowed texture
- Fruit or Seed: Dark reddish brown pod, 5 to 10 inches long and 1.5 to 2 inches wide, leathery texture
