Distinguishing Features: Prickles on young stems, large clusters of tiny flowers at branch tips
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: Upright, typically grows to 10 to 15 feet tall, but infrequently grows as a flat topped tree to as much as 35 feet tall.
- Leaf: Alternate, bi-pinnately compound leaves 32 to 64 inches long, serrated leaf margin, dark green leaf color, yellow-green fall color
- Flower: 5-petaled, white flowers (to 1/8 inch across) bloom in huge, terminal, umbellose panicles (to 24 inches long)
- Bark: Stout stems with prickles, straw colored large moon shaped leaf scars, lenticels
- Fruit or Seed: Spherical black drupes, 0.25 inch long
