Aesculus hippocastanum
Distinguishing Features: Showy flowers in large spikes, leaflets attached to a center point, spiky husk around nuts
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: Typically grows 50 to 75 feet tall with an upright oval-rounded crown.
- Leaf: Light green palmate compound leaves, each with 7 (less frequently 5) spreading oblong leaflets 4-10 inches long. Leaves mature to dark green in summer. Fall color usually consists of undistinguished shades of yellow and brown.
- Flower: White with a blotch of yellow and red color at the base, terminal panicles, 5 inches to 12 inches long and 2 to 5 inches wide
- Bark: Exfoliates in plates on older branches and the trunk to reveal showy orange bark underneath, most of the bark is dark gray and brown
- Fruit or Seed: 2 to 2.5 inches diameter capsules with 1 or 2 seeds, has a dehiscent, spiny husk, light brown in color
