Distinguishing Features: Last leaflet is largest, sharply toothed leaves, nut husk splits in 4 sections
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: Rounded crown that typically grows 50-80 feet tall.
- Leaf: Compound, odd-pinnate, dark yellowish-green leaves 6-12 inches long have 5-7, toothed, ovate-lanceolate leaflets. Leaflets grow 3-6 inches long. Leaves turn yellow in fall.
- Flower: Monoecious, yellowish-green flowers bloom with the male flowers in drooping catkins and the female flowers on short spikes.
- Bark: Gray bark develops scaly ridges as it matures.
- Fruit or Seed: Brown, rounded nut, 0.75 to 1.25 inches in diameter, thick shell surrounds nut, splits at base when mature
