Distinguishing Features: Single-winged seeds in dense clusters, buds fuzzy and dark reddish brown
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 60 to 70 feet tall, shape is oval in youth, becoming more rounded with age
- Leaf: Opposite, pinnately compound leaves, 8 to 15 inches long with 5 to 9 leaflets, leaflets narrow and between 2 inches to 6 inches long, color is dark green above and lighter below, turning yellowish with an overlay of burgundy or purple in fall
- Flower: Dioecious, with male and female plants, small flowers that are green, purple and black
- Bark: Color is light to dark gray, uniformly furrowed with even, diamond-shaped pattern
- Fruit or Seed: Samaras are 1 inches to 2 inches long and narrow, paddle shaped and winged
