Distinguishing Features: May have both needles and flat scales on the same tree, waxy blue berry-like cones
- Type: Evergreen
- Form at maturity: 30feet to 65 feet tall, conical shape in youth, opening with age
- Leaf: Foliage is needle-like; older foliage is scale-like, with each scale about 1/16th of an inch long and compacted to form rounded or 4-sided branchlets, medium green in color
- Flower: Can be monoecious or dioecious, male flower yellow and female green, male flowers have 10-12 stamens
- Bark: Gray to reddish-brown bark exfoliates in thin shreddy strips on mature trees
- Fruit or Seed: Berry-like cones, mature in one year, 0.25 inch in diameter, waxy, blue appearance
