- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 50 to 70 feet tall, pyramidal to conical, especially when young, some older trees, develop spreading, irregular, or almost flat-topped forms
- Leaf: Soft, feathery, yellowish-green foliage (1/4 inch long, flat needles in two ranks) turns into orange/cinnamon-brown in fall
- Flower: Monoecious, make flowers in pendulous 4 to 5 inches clusters, female flowers are cones
- Bark: Reddish brown, vertically fibrous and fissured bark which exfoliates little
- Fruit or Seed: Rounded, wrinkled, 1 inch diameter, purplish-green cones mature to brown
