Distinguishing Features: Seeds in the center of a wing, bark sheds in plates
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: Typically grows to 40-50 feet (less frequently to 70 feet) tall with a rounded crown and long pendulous branching
- Leaf: Alternate leaf arrangement, leaves are similar to U. americana, but smaller, 0.75 to 2.25 inches long, oblique leaf base, serrate leaf margins, dark green leaf color, turns yellowish-brown in fall
- Flower: Insignificant, small, reddish-green flowers
- Bark: Bark exfoliates to reveal a mixture on gray, green, orange, brown, and olive, colors on bark are usually outlines by orange lenticels
- Fruit or Seed: The fruit is oval, 1/2 inch long, notched at tip greenish red in color
