Distinguishing Features: Large showy clusters of white flowers, bright red berries
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 20 to 30 feet tall with an irregular, oval-rounded crown
- Leaf: Elliptic to obovate leaves (to 5 inches long) with sharply toothed margins are dark green above and gray-green beneath. Fall color is golden yellow to orange
- Flower: Cup-shaped, 5-lobed, white flowers (each to 1/2 inch across) in elongated clusters to 3-6 inches long
- Bark: Smooth, gray-brown, conspicuous lenticels that develop into shallow fissures, young stems have shallowly peeling, curling layers
- Fruit or Seed: Clusters of globular, pea-sized berries that ripen to dark purple/black
