Distinguishing Features: Deep and pointed lobes, large acorns with a small cap
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 60 to 80 feet tall, Pyramidal when young, rounded, oval-rounded when mature
- Leaf: Alternate leaf arrangement, leaves are 4 inch to 8 inch long, pointed lobes, 7 lobes per leaf, sometimes 9, deep sinuses, dark green leaf color, orange to red fall color
- Flower: Insignificant flowers in separate male and female catkins
- Bark: Gray-brown glabrous stems, older stems have a onion-like sheath
- Fruit or Seed: Acorn, up to 1 inch long, involucre just barely covers acorn tip, acorn is striated with black and brown lines
