Distinguishing Features: Very dark and shiny green leaves, small and squat acorns
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 50 to 75 feet tall, pyramidal in youth, oval, rounded or gum drop-shaped when mature
- Leaf: Simple, unlobed leaves, alternate leaf arrangement, Narrow, oblong, smooth-margined leaves are 3 to 6 inches long, matured summer foliage is a very dark, lustrous green, yellow-brown in autumn
- Flower: Insignificant monoecious yellowish-green flowers in separate male and female catkins
- Bark: Brownish gray bark develops shallow furrowing and ridging with age
- Fruit or Seed: Fruits are rounded acorns (to 3/4 inch long), with scaly cups that extend to approximately 1/3 the acorn length
