Distinguishing Features: Showy white flowers in long hanging clusters, thorns on stems near buds

- Form at maturity: 40 to 50 feet tall, long straight trunk with irregular branching
- Leaf: Alternate, pinnately compound leaves, 6 to 17 inches long with 7 to 19 elliptical leaflets, dark and dull blue-green
- Flower: Pendulous clusters of creamy white pea-like flowers, 4 to 8 inches long, very fragrent
- Bark: Dark gray with heavy tope-like ridges that interlace
- Fruit or Seed: Flat 2 yo 4 inch long pod, stays on the tree in winter
