Staghorn Sumac

Distinguishing Features: Leaflet center stem and young branches are hairy, fruit in a bright red spike at tops of branches
- Type: Deciduous
- Form at maturity: 15 to 25 feet tall, flat-topped crown
- Leaf: Alternate leaf arrangement, pinnately compound leaves, leafs are 1 to 2 feet long, 13 to 27 leaflets, each leaflet is lanceolate in shape, 2 to 5 inches long, leaflets have a serrated margin, yellow, orange to red fall color
- Flower: Tiny, greenish-yellow flowers bloom in terminal cone-shaped panicles, with male and female flower cones primarily occurring on separate plants (dioecious)
- Bark: Extremely hairy stems, concealed lenticels, older stems are not pubescent
- Fruit or Seed: Pyramidal fruiting clusters (to 8 inches long), with each cluster containing numerous hairy, berry-like drupes which ripen bright red, gradually turning dark red
