Distinguishing Features: Large sticky buds, seeds have white cottony fibers

- Flower: Dioecious, appear in separate yellow catkins on separate male and female trees, Male flowers are reddish in color
- Bark: Mature bark is deeply furrowed, weak and brittle, light, greenish brown color, grayish, ellow stems
- Fruit or Seed: Elongated capsule, white, cotton-like ball, 3 to 4 valved, 0.25 to 0.33 inch long
